Whenever we have tried to recreate our Andalucian adventures in one of the trendy tapas bars that seem to be proliferating in the UK these days we've usually been disappointed. What a pleasure, therefore, to discover a breath of fresh Iberian air at El Puerto on the harbourside. The space is cool and cavernous, the whitewashed arch adding to the authentic feel. The Mediterranean staff are uniformly charming and helpful and the lively yet unobtrusive background music complements the mood perfectly (they also have weekly live flamenco dancing and music.) The great thing about tapas is its versatility and sociability - like dim sum, one can get a range to sample and share. El Puerto offers about 50 different sorts ranging from meat to fish dishes plus vegetarian including their delicious tortilla (Spanish omelette). They also do larger main dishes including paella, sea bass and fillet steak. They have an extensive selection of Spanish wines and beers and sangria !
